Tribute to King of Pop

Asian fans mourn "King of Pop"
Article Here
It is undeniable that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, born in 1958, has and will always be one of the most influential media person that contributed to the US globalisation of mass media.

By the age of 11, the very talented Michael Jackson is already named a superstar. He started his singing career in America and his music soon spread fast across to all. He can be considered as the first who introduced and brought the American pop music to the Asian culture. His creation of songs, dance moves and fashion had turned to classics and will always be remembered by the people.

From the above, we can see how powerful the media is to dominating the world. US had always been the most important participant the the global mass media industry and is the biggest exporter of mass media products internationally. Therefore, we tend to receive and absorb many of the American culture that were imported and shown to us.

Back to Michael Jackson, he was not only known for his most wonderful music. But rather, he was also well known for his weirdest behaviours. It would probably be too long a post to name them all out. And because he is such an leading figure in the media, his unexplained actions such as plastic surgeries, drugs and child sexual abuses had the power to diffuse ideas to the public and affect his die hard fans. The things he did were always magnified and discussed globally and has the ability to change people's perception.

No doubts that he is the greatest creator and contributor that brought many music lovers all over the world together. But putting aside his works and actions, Michael Jackson will never be who he is today without the presence of media to promote him. The media has the ability to package and shape a person, and many a times, real life reality are being defined by media. Because of Michael Jackson, people had a affixed an image of how pop artists should be like, how they should be talented in the several ways. Although I was only a young kid when he made his mark, I will always view Michael Jackson as a legend.

  1. You are forgetting his humanitarian efforts that were unsurprisingly, were never really covered by the media. I think that you have the whole concept the other way round. The media today would not be what it is without Michael Jackson.

Thank you so much for your tribute. Never Forget.

  2. Yes, I have to agree with the above comment that the media today would not be what it is without Michael Jackson. He has done far more than the media has credited him for. Can we ever find another legend like him again? I would say "probably never."

R.I.P Michael Jackson. You will live down history like no else did.

  3. Although i believe him to be a legend of our era, just like elvis presley of the previous generation, I still think the press creates an overrated reaction to his death. Even during his funeral, the media is earning money from his death, i believe the media world is quite warped up compared to last time.

Well, these are just my comments.
Shoot me if you don't like it =P

  7. I think that the media do plays a part in promoting michael jackson to become a successful music icon in our era - and also The king of Pop, But sadly, the media also potrays his " bad" ways like drug trafficking, plastic surgeries which you have mentioned.

But i must say , the media only plays a part in promoting michael jackson as Michael Jackson himself is a talented soul , and as what i heard , he was the 1st person to make /create music videos -

    :)

  9. Regarding the "paedophile" accusations, I don't think it's right of us or anyone to jump to conclusions that he actually did do those things. He's a celebrity, and these people may just be out to exploit him.

Anyway, like his sister said, "He's worth more dead than alive." And since the police has raised the prospect of a homicide charge over his death. Things are getting more complicated.

It's sad to hear all this things happening. What happened to "rest in peace"? I really hope he does.

  10. hi diana,
sad to say, thats what media does to attract more audiences and increase the viewers.
people are just interested to know such things isn't it?
he is the one who came up with music videos? haha. thanks so much for the info. once again it just proves how much he contributed to the media, to what media is today.

  11. hi wei liang,
    thanks for the comment,
i agree that the media tend to exeggerate issues and report what that would arouse viewer's attention.
people out there might be trying to exploit him, sadly, thats the part you have to face as a media person.
although things are getting really complicated about his death. but that continues to show that he is a real influential person that millions of people are interested to know more about. he continues his media and star persona even though he is dead, does this prove that he is certainly a successful and legendary media icon?

  12. Successful yes, legendary, certainly. Media icon, I think he'd rather not. Not as if the media are portraying him in a good light. But that's their job, exaggerate and bring in the money. That's their ultimate aim.
