"I'm a striker and not a left winger," says Rooney, as he hits out at boss Ferguson.

Above is a claim by Wayne Rooney after a match against Kazakhstan. He proved himself with the match's results, that he is better as a centre-forward than a winger. Rooney played on the left in the first half, which finished goalless. He moved inside for the second half, and scored twice in a 5-1 victory.

A soccer group comprises of 11 players, working hands in hands, or rather, legs in legs. They are a group of interdependence team players, although responsible for different roles, eventually playing towards a common goal.
I happen to pass by this article and find it a good example of Group Communication. Rooney was declaring that: "although it is a team game, but maybe i have to be more selfish in where I want to play..."
Previously playing for Manchester United, Rooney was given the position to play as a winger. It was not his choice, but the manager's decision. This is when group pressure comes in; whereby Rooney's needs and the group needs comes in conflict.
From my point of view, Rooney, at a bigger point is taking care of his personal interest by proving that he is good scoring as a striker. On the other hand, the team's manager has to look at the bigger picture, trying his best to assign positions he thinks is best for each individual player, getting the most beneficial results out of it. Rooney might have to face it that this is a team thing, and he must understand the role he plays in the team. Everyone has the rights to speak up in a team, but not forgetting to open up for comments and discussion.
I am admitting that I do not know much about soccer. However, to me, a group is one that have to make compromise. Perhaps working in a group, the process is much more important than how the results turn out. Rooney might have prove his competency better when playing as striker, but looking at other possible factors, it could have been a psychological effect that made him achieve such results.
Rooney is now playing for the England team, which is offering him the position he likes playing most. He has got what he wanted and is doing a good job out of it. However, ultimately one has to understand that this is a team thing, everyone has to be able to identify their roles and position, and not let stubbornness strike up, causing uneccessary disputes that affects the process and results.
This is where self serving bias becomes more evident in a group. Rooney must know why the manager puts him elsewhere. It is because there is someone more suited to be the forward than him.
ReplyDeleteIn a team, it is good to voice out displeasure so that the group can iron out differences to achieve better group dynamics. However, some people need to reflect about themselves before making a din, which often, most of us fail to do so... ...

ReplyDeleteLooking from another perspective, could the problem lie on the manager of Man-U???
ReplyDeleteThere are a few "if"s here:
1). If the manager had opened his ears (listen & communicate effectively with the team members)...
2). If the manager had opened his eyes (identify Rooney's potential of being a striker) and let him try the striker position...
3). If there were no personal favouritism/feud between the manager and players leading to unhappiness and miscommunication in the team (which is often present in team play)...
Hi grayze,
ReplyDeletePerhaps that is what we have to face working as a team. There ought to be different views and disagreements. Of course, i am not saying that Rooney is not making the right decision.
However, Rooney's statement, "although it is a team game, but maybe i have to be more selfish in where I want to play..." sounds very self centered. It is not as if the other players can choose what they want to play.
Putting apart whos fault it is, I still think that Rooney should understand his role in the team. Ultimately, the manager is the one who holds the right to make the decision.
Conflicts are sure to arise in groups, the worse situation comes when an agreement couldn't be made. Perhaps Rooney made the right choice to join the England team which recognises his talent as a striker.
There is a reason why Ferguson is given the title 'manager'. He was appointed the position because the Man-u stakeholders respect his knowledge of the game and trust him to make the correct decisions. Sometimes, being in a group, it is also your duty to understand who are the appointed 'leaders' and decision-makers.
ReplyDeleteIf you fail to respect the 'leader's' decision, you fail your duty as a team member. I feel that Rooney chose to play badly in the left-wing position. He could have done it consciously or unconsciously. He probably wanted to point out that his diagnostic of his own skill is more accurate than his manager's.
i think this whole article is made up by the media. no player would dare hit out @ Sir Alex. those who have have tasted the boot. jaap stam... david beckham...ruud van nisterooy just to name a few. so big hoohah over a made up story.
ReplyDeleteWell he might just get what he wished for. some players that played in his potion left due to bad group communication ie Teves and Ronaldo gone to Madrid well cause they paid an insane amount for him.
ReplyDeleteIf Rooney doesn't perform i think there will be alot of group pressure on him and will be sold in the next season or so
He will definitely be given a more Central Forward role next season due to the lost of likes of Christiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Under Sir Alex, I believe Rooney is more than happy to play in whichever position given to him. No doubt, he is a naturally talented striker and had expressed his intention to play as a striker to the media, I as a Man United supporter for many years, feel he is as good as a winger. He can provide crosses that defenders fear the most and in which other strikers can convert them into goals.
ReplyDeleteMedia has brought unnecessary pressure to the manager. Rooney would have already talked to the manager about it. With 22 years of experience as the manager, Sir Alex Ferguson has made the best decision for the team and for Rooney.
Moreover, being able to play in two or more position will greatly benefit the team and the player. Rooney has been very versatile in games and opposite teams are having a hard time marking him.
To conclude, the media has brought much entertainment to us, which eventually led to the discussion here and in other media channels. It also brought about inconvenience to the players and the game of english football.
hi zx,
ReplyDeletei like your comment on how media had certainly brought unnecessary pressure to the manager. because he has to not only answer to the team, but also to the mass supporters, media and the country's pride and honour. i am sure the manager had put in the effort to analyse and tried to make the best decision.
Personally I do not know much about soccer and don't even know what a winger is. However, I do believe that communication is crucial in a team. The manager should have communicate his decision well and not just by saying 'He is more suitable than you'. It is his job to make every player understand and feel good about their position and play as a team.
